Stewart’s Sports Tour, held on 20th July 2024, was an inspiring 18-mile team walk through Bristol, aimed at raising vital funds and awareness for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. The event was created in support of Bristol footballing legend Marcus Stewart, who has been battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND) since his diagnosis in 2022. Stewart, a former player and coach, is known for his successful career with clubs such as Bristol Rovers, Ipswich Town, Sunderland, and Bristol City. The tour not only honoured Stewart’s contributions to football but also aimed to shine a light on his courage and the challenges faced by those living with MND.
The tour was a sporting celebration, connecting some of Bristol’s most iconic sports venues. Beginning and ending at Bristol Rovers’ Memorial Stadium, participants passed by the homes of the Bristol Flyers basketball team, Bristol Storm, Broad Plain Rugby Club, Bristol City Football Club at Ashton Gate, and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. This unique route highlighted the unity and strength of Bristol’s sporting community, all rallying behind a cause close to many hearts.
The event was a part of ongoing efforts to support the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, an organisation co-founded by Stephen Darby, a former professional footballer, and Chris Rimmer, an ex-serviceman, both diagnosed with MND. Since its inception in 2019, the foundation has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about MND, provide financial assistance and support to those living with the disease, and fund crucial research aimed at finding a cure. Their work is also dedicated to educating the public about the devastating impact of this incurable condition, and empowering those affected by it.
One standout participant in Stewart’s Sports Tour was Powersystems very own Barry Booth, representing the East Terrace Gas Senior Ultras team consisting of Martin Henry , Matt Hicks, Paul Noble, John Pearce, Barry Booth and Dave Gover who took on the demanding 18-mile walk with incredible dedication. In a tremendous show of generosity and support, Barry and the team raised a remarkable £1,610 for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. His commitment, alongside that of other walkers, helped ensure that the event was a resounding success, contributing directly to the foundation’s mission to improve the lives of people with MND and bring us closer to finding a cure.
Congratulations to Barry Booth and all the participants in Stewart’s Sports Tour. Their efforts have not only provided vital funds but also helped raise the profile of MND, furthering the fight against this devastating disease. The support for Marcus Stewart and the work of the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation continue to demonstrate the power of community, sport, and hope in the face of adversity.
