On Friday, 17 May 2024, Eastwood Park Training and Conference Center played host to Powersystems’ second Company Day. The event, a perfect blend of reflection, learning, and celebration, opened with an address from Managing Director, Chris Jenkins, and Finance Director, Rachel Berry. They spoke about the evolution of Powersystems since the formation of the Employee-Owned Trust in 2019, highlighting the significant milestones and the dynamic growth that has brought many new faces into the fold.
With the company expanding rapidly, it was a valuable opportunity for everyone to gather and reflect on the collective journey. Chris and Rachel’s recounting of Powersystems’ transformative years offered insights into the changes, challenges, and learnings that have shaped our trajectory. Their words painted a vivid picture of a team united by a shared vision and a commitment to continuous improvement.
A highlight of the day was the address by the UK’s renowned Health and Safety Motivational Speaker, Jason Anker MBE. Jason’s story is one of tragedy turned into a mission for safety and awareness. In a thought-provoking and candid session, he recounted the fateful day in 1993 when a fall from just 10 feet on a construction site left him paralyzed from the waist down. His vivid narration of the accident and its aftermath, marked by intense physical pain and emotional turmoil, struck a deep chord with us all.
Jason’s honest recounting of his struggles with depression, substance abuse, and withdrawal from society provided a raw, human perspective on the consequences of workplace negligence. A particularly poignant moment was when Jason showed a video featuring his parents, highlighting the ripple effects of his accident on his family. The personal and vivid sight of his father breaking down in the video was a powerful reminder of the far-reaching impact of workplace accidents.
Despite the immense challenges, Jason’s story is one of resilience and redemption. He spoke about finding a spark of purpose in his darkest days, realising that his experience could serve as a powerful lesson for others. His transformation into a motivational speaker and safety advocate embodies his belief that accidents are preventable, and that safety should always be the top priority. His message around the FCUK It scale resonated deeply with the Powersystems team, reinforcing the company’s commitment to health and safety as its Priority No.1.
After Jason’s impactful session, the day continued with a lunch and a series of engaging team activities. From air rifle shooting and axe throwing to building a go-kart and participating in a falconry workshop, the activities were a hit. The falconry workshop, in particular, stood out as a unique and exhilarating experience, offering team members the rare chance to hold birds of prey.
The day concluded on a high note with cake and the presentation of long service and Powersystems 5P’s value awards. These awards celebrate individual achievements and acknowledge the contributions of the wider team, fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie with us all.
The great British weather decided to grace the event with sunshine, adding to the warm atmosphere.
As the day came to a close, thoughts turned to next year’s Company Day, with whispers of a spa day complete with facials and massages on the horizon!
The second Company Day at Powersystems was not just an event but a testament to the company’s spirit of growth, learning, and resilience. Here’s to many more such inspiring and unifying days ahead.
